Monday, July 28th, 2008

Filipina professional muay-thai champion Christine Toledo gets a crack at another big name in her sport when she takes on British champion Ruth Ashdown on July 26 at the Las Vegas Hilton in Nevada.

The Toledo-Ashdown match will follow full muay-thai rules which means the fighters will be allowed to use their elbows and knees to strike their opponents’ heads in the five-round, three-minute match. Toledo, 30, is coming off a rousing victory over top-ranked female boxer Emily Beardon in a bout held recently in New York.

Toledo actively trains and competes under the instruction of Master Chan and Anthony Badua in Las Vegas. She has been training for a total of seven years.Toledo competes in the bantamweight and featherweight divisions (112 and 118 lbs). She currently holds a record of 12 wins and two losses. She also holds the WKA United States title, and the MTIA world title.

Badua, Toledo’s Filipino trainer, said Christine will be ready for her coming fight.

“Christine really commits herself to training and delivers the best she can. She acknowledges that she isn’t perfect,” Badua said.

“After every fight, she realizes that there is always room for improvement and so much more to learn. That’s what makes her a great person and fighter,” he added.Toledo was born to Adelina Quindara Toledo who hails from Zambales and Oscar Rodriguez Toledo who is from Cavite.

Toledo’s most recent visit to the Philippines was in November 2007.

Other Filipino fighters on the card include Romie Adanza, Shane Del Rosario, and the main event featuring professional muay-thai champion Michael Mananquil.

Please… It’s Plutoid not Pluto

Honestly, I didn’t understand so much about IAU’s or International Astronomical Union’s explanation why it should be Plutoid not Pluto. :-) (IAU has been responsible in naming planetary bodies and their satellites since the early 1900’s)

I just had to admit that of course I know there are stars and planets up above the sky, and that they are not likely to fall upon us at all. But other than that, oh.. astronomy is really not my strong point. :-)

But, just for the record folks… since 2006 Pluto is already controversially demoted from the Planet kingdom and is now just a plain member of the Plutoid family together with Eris.

What is Plutoid?

As defined… Plutoids are celestial bodies in orbit around the sun at a distance greater than that of Neptune that have sufficient mass for their self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that they assume a hydrostatic equilibrium (near-spherical) shape, and that have not cleared the neighborhood around their orbit.

In short: small round things beyond Neptune that orbit the sun and have lots of rocky neighbors.

That’s it folks… plutoid not pluto… :-)

Farewell Yves Saint Laurent

yves saint laurent

Farewell to the 71 year old legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent who died last Sunday, he who reworked the rules of fashion by putting women into elegant pantsuits that came to define how modern women dressed.
Saint Laurent was acknowledged as the most influential and enduring designer of the 20th Century. From the first YSL tuxedo and his trim pantsuits to see-through blouses, safari jackets and glamorous gowns, Saint Laurent created instant classics that remain stylish decades later.
Although, his original creations and other items under his labels like RiveGauche collection, fragrances, cosmetics and accessories are far too expensive for ordinary Pinays. It is a dream for any Pinay fashionista to have at least one of his original creations. (although, I do not support  the idea of spending huge amounts for original brands). I still believe that Yves Saint Laurent is truly a designer who has empowered women in terms of fashion.

“Fashion was not only supposed to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves.”
- Saint Laurent

Typhoon Cosme in the Philippines

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

While I was so busy blogging about the disaster that happened in Myanmar and China,
I wasn’t a bit prepared that I would also encounter such disastrous adversity.
Typhoon Cosme, badly hit Pangasinan. Even if, thankfully, the death toll and damage was
not as immense as what Myanmar and China had endured, the impairment is still huge.

According to news, with atleast 37 death tolls, most casualties are in Pangasinan. Flood, damage to infrastructure and agriculture, and landslides are mostly  the outcome of the typhoon Cosme.
Imagine, we had to through at least one month of no electricity, no ample supply of water
and no internet connection. (goshhh!)

At least dial-up and power generator are still in the option. :-)

Parreno Family Forgot Toddler at the Airport | Filipino Immigrants

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Whew, the Filipinos made it again in the international news. Good news? UhUh, kindda on the serious-to-comedic side.

Check this title : Parents Board Flight, Forget Toddler at Airport”

A family boarded a flight on Monday in westernmost Canada, and forgot their tot at the Vancouver international airport, media said Tuesday.

The 23-month-old boy’s family had just arrived in Canada from the Philippines, but they were forced to repack their overweight bags before catching a connecting flight to Winnipeg, causing them to run late.

In their sprint to the gate, the family became separated.

The boy’s father Jun Parreno, told local media he had thought his son was with his wife and the boy’s grandparents, who ran ahead. They thought the boy was with his dad.

On the plane, the family members were seated separately and so did not immediately realize they had left the child behind.

Sometime later, a security guard found the boy, who speaks no English, wandering near the departure gate, and Air Canada officials tracked down his shocked parents on the flight.

Because the boy was so young, he was not issued a boarding pass and would have sat on a parent’s lap during the flight, so airline personnel did not notice a passenger was missing.

According to the Vancouver Sun, airport security found a Tagalog-speaking Air Canada agent who looked after the child while his father flew 2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) back to Vancouver to pick him up and then return to Winnipeg to rejoin the immigrant family on their first day in Canada.

The baby was kept in Air Canada’s offices and staff found him some toys, said local media.

“Air Canada took good care of him,” Parreno told the daily Winnipeg Free Press upon arrival. “I’m grateful.”

Of course many would consider this as a serious negligence, but I’m pretty much sure a lot of Filipinos would have a very very good laugh at this incident.  :D :D Go Pinoy!!!
